Vlasina lake is located in way south part of the Serbia. In municipality of Surdulica. It was created in fifties of nineteenth centurie. And today is protected as Nature reserve.

Here is camping paradise. And also, you have rare village and weekend houses, where you can rent accommodation. You will be very satisfied here if you like relaxing in nature, hiking, water and mountains. Near Vlasina lake there are mountains, with Cemernik as most famous. Beside them, near are also Plana mountain and Vardenik. Besna kobila mountain is also near.

How to get to Vlasina lake

Vlasina lake is second largest artificial lake in Serbia, with surface of 16 square kilometers. First is Djerdap lake. And also, Vlasina lake is lake on highest altitude in Serbia on 1213 meters. Nearest city to this lake is Vranje, on about 60 kilometers. From Belgrade to here is about 345 km, and from Nis about 115. From Pirot to Vlasina there is 90 km, and from Leskovac to here is about 75. you can come here by bus to Surdulica. Or with your car.

To Vlasina lake you can come by E75 highway through Vladicin han and Surdulica to village Promaja. Or by same highway through Leskovac, Vlasotnice and Crna trava to Vodojaz.

Creation of Vlasina lake

First data about Vlasina lake are from 18 th century. In that time on this territory was swamp. Mud and reed. And in that time this are was called Vlasina mud or Vlasina swamp. Vlasina lake became with joining two rivers in period of 1949 to 1954. Beside this two rivers, in Vlasina flow Jerma, Cemernica, Strvina, Lisina, Ljubotenska and Bozicna river. Building of Vlasina dam was from period from 1946. to 1949.

Beauty of Vlasina lake and around

The Vlasina lake surrounding area is beautiful, and with small number of people. That is advantage and disadvantage in the same time. The area around lake, with mountains, lake, mud islands make it very interesting place for staying. Beaucuse of that, it is declared as Nature reserve and protected from state of Serbia.

In Vlasina lake and around there are wild fruit, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries etc. The trees that are most common around the lake are birch, black and white pine. Birch is in the same time trademark of Vlasina lake. Yellow beech is unique on this area around the lake. There are more that 300 registered hermal plants around the lake. Drosera (Sundews), flash eating plant, can be also found here. An cherry laurel. Beside all this amazing flora, fauna is also here. Among the amazing animals is squirrel, stork, herons etc.

The weather is mostly moderate during the year. Average temperature in winter is -3, in January. In summer, August, average is 16 degrees. In winter lake is frozen even 50 centimeters deep. And snow is falling for few meters high.

There are four hydro power plants on river Vrla. Vrla I, Ii, III, IV.

Floating islands on Vlasina lake

The lake itself is clean. And you can swim there. There are floating islands on this lake. And two fixed, Stratoria and Dugi del. And also, a large number of floating one. They were here much before flooding of this territory. Just in that time, they were not floating islands, just histosol. Bit with flooding they are raised on the surface of the lake. This is unique in the world. You can do fun things with them. Like floating on them. But be careful. The thickness of this moving islands is from 30 centimeters to meter.

Vlasina lake and legend of a monster

Everything started when Bulgarian enemy horse regiment was moving through here. In that time, here was not lake. It was swamp. And that horse regiment became missing with no trace. That was in period of WWI. Vlasina lake monster had it’s story from long time ago. Even before this incident. Beside this one, many animals diapered from around the lake. And all that started Legend of Vlasina lake.

That lake monster had shape of giant horse, or bull. Depending of who is telling the legend. Vlasna monster got it’s shape after liberation from Ottoman Empire. Strange things happened connected with this legend, even in WWII. In that time, strange sounds came from there. With building of dam and creation of lake, this monster did not show up any more, but legend stayed.

Churches and monasteries of Vlasina

Around Vlasina area there are few villages. One of them is Palja. Maybe most important in this sense. In Palja is located Monastery of Holy Good mother. It’s unknown when and how it was built. But it is mentioned in some writings from 818 year. Another story say that it was built few centuries latter, in time of Nemanjic dynasty. But one thing is certain, that frescoes are from the end of 19th century. This monastery was visited by Saint Sava two times. That fact is saying that the monastery is much older that it’s today’s frescoes. Except this monastery, there are churches that are located in villages in Vlasina area. Church of Saint Ilija in Vlasina Rid, St.Nikola’s church in Crna trava etc.

Lisina or Lisina lake is artificial accumulation on Lisina River. It is also accumulation that tributes water to Vlasina lake. It is located in town Dimitrovgrad territory. On about 25 kilometers form Vlasina lake itself.
