Devil’s stone is located around Vranje, on about 42km from it, in southern Serbia, near a border with Bulgaria and Macedonia. From city of Niš it’s about 163km to here, and from Belgrade 382km.

Devil’s stone is very similar to Devils town for the rocks, devils. But the distance between is about 150km. Here you can find very high stones that people say are the devils, also. That’s how it got name, Devils stone. There about ten of them.

Devil’s stone, devils watched by church

On the highest level of this location you can see church, of St. Godmother. Also known as church in Prosecnik. As object with higher altitude than others, it can be said that it is watching on others.

Church dates from 14th century.It was built by duke Dejan Markovic, with blessing of ruler Emperor Dušan. This location is similar to Devil’s town, near Kuršumlija. Today, this church is protected by state of Serbia.

About this church and this stone figures location, named Devil’s stone, there are few legends. In first legend, locals built church in their village. Than in night devils came and dismantle it, and built it ip in the hill. And every night. Until one day roosters sang and down surprised them, so thew never did it again.

On second legend, two locals loved each other. She was poor, he was sun of rich local merchant. And also everyone was against them. But, the decided to wed. And after the wedding he had and accident, and fell in canyon. She jumped after him. And that is the reason why never anyone else got married here after.

Opposite from the legends there is a belief that this place is curing infertility. For that reason females and couples with this problem are coming here often to pray for change.

And another legend about Devil’s stone, is that devils brought this big rock to turn river Pčinja another way. And also, the church that was built by locals by day, devils demolished. Than, they took building material to top of the rock. And that is how this church was built here in time.

The truth about this tourist attraction near Trgoviste and Vranje is a lot different. It was built by Serbian landlord Dejan Marković in seocond half of 14th century.
