What are the Vranje sights? What to see in Vranje in general? The city of Vranje, the most southern city in Serbia. Only 50 kilometers from the border with North Macedonia. Very small, but with a great spirit. It will take you back to some past, interesting time. The time of Serbian famous novelist Bora Stanković, “merak” of Vranje, love, history. It won’t take us long to visit the Vranje. And if you also want to enjoy it, then stop looking at your watch, and set aside at least one weekend. So let’s start with Vranje itself, and then pay attention to the surroundings. And there is much to see!
Vranje sights Museum in Pasin konak (house)
The “Pasin konak” complex is about 250 years old. It is one of the buildings in Vranje and even Serbia that take you back to that long past time. And it is one of the biggest sights of Vranje. If not the most important in Vranje itself. It was built by Raif Bey Džinic in 1765. That is the time that has been written about, and that is imagined today when reading those novels by Bora Stanković. That is period after the liberation from the Ottoman Empire. It is a period that still had a great legacy of that historical period. And this is one of the few buildings in the country that is still existing.
Pasha’s residence (Pasin konak) complex consists of two buildings. The first object is “salamuk”, ie. a facility where men resided. There were women in another building. He is a “hamermluk.” After it’s construction, many important institutions of this city were important in the Salamuk building. First the school, and then the building of the Assembly of the Municipality of Vranje. Today, it is the National Museum of Vranje. Not only for the period of the last 250 years, but also the entire history of this part of Serbia. Coins, weapons and tools, various items found to date in the Pčinja district. House of Bora Stankovic in Vranje
The birth house of the famous Serbian writer Bora Stanković was built in 1855. This is one more building, next to “Pasin konak” building, from the past. Since 1967, it has been the Museum of Vranje. Bora Stanković’s birth house is located in Baba Zlatina Street in Vranje. By the way, the street was named after Baba Zlata, the grandmother of Bora Stanković himself. Based on this fact alone, you can see how much impact he has on this city (as well as the whole of Serbia) even after all this time. Around the house is a yard that fully depicts that period. The working hours of this museum building, the Memorial House of Bora Stanković, are on weekdays from 8 am to 8 pm. He works on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 1 pm. The monument to Bora Stanković is located in the city park.
History archive Of Vranje 31. January
In addition to these three buildings that are part of the Museum, another building has its own show. It is the Historical Archive of Vranje. The historical archive of Vranje “January 31” was named after the date of the liberation of the city from the Ottomans. It is located at 17a Partizanska Street in Vranje. Vranje sights of love, bridge of love
The White Bridge is one of the sights of Vranje. It is also called the Bridge of Love and was built in 1844. It is located on the official logos of all important institutions in the city. The bridge ia as any other bridge. Is small, but with an important story related to it. In fact, there are more legends at stake. But against them, there are also some historical facts. Legends are related to Vranje’s Romeo and Juliet, Stojan and Ajsa.
This love story ended tragically. According to one legend, Aisha’s father mistakenly shot his daughter in an attempt to shoot Stojan. And after, Stojan took his own life. Secondly, because of her love for Stojan, her father took her life. According to the third, she took her own life because her father forbade her to be in love with Stojan. Also, there is a legend according to which a couple in love take their own life together.
The White bridge in Vranje is called The bridge of love because of legend about it.
The truth about the White Bridge in Vranje is a little different. The truth is written on a plaque located on the bridge itself. Not much is known based on the text on that board, as well as some historical data. But, considering all that, one comes to the conclusion that Aisha really existed. And that the bridge is hers and the endowment of her family. There is no official information about her love with Stojan.
Bridges of Vranje
Another bridge has this kind of plaque on which there is gratitude to the founders. It is a bridge in Zlatiborska Street in Vranje. Its founder is the son of ruler of the city in that time Hussein Pasha, Suleiman. The bridge was built in 1848, and is not in its original condition today. But the fundraiser is still there.
In addition to these two bridges, there are two more that are from that period. Even less is known about them. As well as the manner and reasons for their construction. These are the bridges next to Amam and “Mačkov kamen”, on the Vranjanska river.
One fact not connected with bridges. But with local ruler, Husein Pasha. A year before the construction of the White Bridge, there was an incident surrounding the construction of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Vrnje. Named “Asharat Buna“. During the construction of this temple, the then ruler of the city, Hussein Pasha, made a voluntary contribution on the orders of Constantinople. He gave a large sum of money, as well as material for the church. As the Muslim population heard, they immediately revolted and expelled part of the population, and damaged the church. That rebellion was quelled by the authorities.
Vranje sights Djerenka fountain
Djerenka is a public fountain in Vranje built as part of the unrelenting love of an Ottoman young man and a Serbian girl. The unfortunate Djerdelez failed to win the girl’s heart, but his suffering is reflected in this object. Today, it is not in its original location, because it was moved. It is located near The White Bridge. It is also described in the works of the famous writer from Vranje Bora Stanković. The Ottoman Djerdelez could not hide his love for that woman from Vranje.
And after a very long period, he tried to force himself to get get to know her. She ran away scared. And they never saw each other again. After a few years, he left Vranje. It is a Legend about the Djerenka Fountain.
Ancient Krševica kale Damastion
Krševiča Kale is the oldest landmark of Vranje and its surroundings. At approximately the same distance from Vranje, as from Bujanovac, there is this still completely unexplored locality. The ancient Damastion, today’s locality Krševica kale, is located in the village Krševica. About 14 kilometers from Vranje, or 11 from Bujanovac.
Markovo kale or Vranje fortress
Markovo kale in Vranje is located in the immediate vicinity of that city, about 6 kilometers. It was named after the legend according to which Maro Kraljević lived here, and that this is his fortification. For now only by legend. Even his horse Sarac left hoof marks in the rocks. The Vranje fortress protected the surrounding roads from bandits. It falls under Ottoman rule with the fall of the city of Vranje. It is believed that it was initially a fortification from the 6th century. It has since been demolished and rebuilt several times. Vranjska banja spa
“Vranjska Banja” is a spa with a record hottest water in Europe. The water temperature in the thermomineral springs in Vranjska Banja is up to 110 degrees Celsius. In addition to the temperature, characteristic of this water is that it’s also mineral, sulfur dioxide and slightly alkaline. So in addition to medical you can rest. It is also good for balneological tourism. And all these treatments are taken care of by the Special Hospital for Rehabilitation Vranjska Banja, the so-called “Stacionar”, which means Infirmary.
Vranjska Banja is located about 11 kilometers from Vranje, at the foot of the mountain Besna kobila. It belongs to the group of Royal Spas of Serbia, because members of the royal family were treated there. And the residents of this spa are very proud of that. Bujanovacka banja spa
Bujanovaka banja spa was named after the town of Bujanovac. It is located about 3 kilometers from that city. And 14 from Vranje. It is about 120 kilometers away from Nis, and 360 kilometers from Belgrade. It is located in the south of Serbia. On altitude of around 400 meters. It is only 14 km away from Vranje, and about 360 km from Belgrade.
Bujanovacka banja spa deals with the treatment with mud, thermo-mineral springs and carbon dioxide gas. Sources say that the possibilities of treatment have been known since ancient times. Even before the ancient Romans. This territory became part of Serbia in the 12th century, and before that it was part of Byzantium. This small spa does not have large number of accommodation capacity. But certainly has few thermal springs.
Besna kobila mountain near Vranje
The “Besna kobila” mountain is located about 47 kilometers from the city of Vranje. The mountain is rich in plant species, over 700 of them. In addition to its proximity to the border and the height of 1923 meters above sea level, you can see the surroundings. You can even see the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria from Besna Kobila mountain. Lake Valasinsko is located about 60 kilometers from Vranje. The location of this artificial lake is in the municipality of Surdulica. Prvonek picnic place
Prvonek reservoir is located in the same name village near Vranje. It is accumulated water that is used to supply drinking water to Vranje and Vranjska Banja spa. By building the dam on the Vranjska river, the amount of water was obtained, but also something else. A place to enjoy for the population from surrounding territory. This is one of the favorite picnic spots of the surrounding population. There are sports fields, a swimming pool which make it very interesting in the summer months.
Around Vranje sights Vražji kamen (Devil’s town)
Not far from Vranje, two kilometers from the municipality of Trgovište, lies the locality of “Vražji kamen (Devil’s stone)“. It is about 40 kilometers away from Vranje itself. Why is the “Vražji kamen” sight important? Similar to the Djavolja varoš (Devil’s Town), this is another place in Serbia for which there are interesting legends. In addition, they are supported by the appearance and atmosphere of the area itself. Rocks that look like figures. The church that is at the top of the rock, which is under the protection of the state of Serbia. The river Pcinja that passes here. Kazandjol sight near Vranje
Canyon of the Vranje river Kazandjol. At the same time, it is one of the favorite picnic spots of the people of Vranje. Because of the river, of the nature. And also, because of the whirlpools in the river. Which are also called “cauldrons (kazan in Serbian)”, hence the name Kazandjol. The location itself has several whirlpools, waterfalls. Kazandjol is known as the place where Gavrilo Princip trained for a great assassination with members of “Mlada Bosna”. He lived in that period in today’s Gavrila Principa Street.
Kazandjol whirlpools are located 3 kilometers from the building of the municipality of Vranje. It is on the territory of Vranje itself. It can also be reached by a path that goes to the canyon of the Vranjska river, which is located between the mountains Pljačkovica and Krstilovica.
Vranje sights Aleksandrovac lake
A weekend on Aleksandrovac Lake about 8 kilometers from Vranje is a great idea for cooling off in the summer. It was created in 1964. It used to be a favorite picnic spot for the people of Vranje. Today it’s not for swimming, or it is. It depends on the moment and the pollution of the lake. Today, time is spent on the coast, due to water pollution, especially for the May 1st holiday.

Apart from all these sights of Vranje, there are several other smaller monuments that need to be seen. Also the Monument to the Victims of NATO Aggression, the Monument to the Trumpeter Baki Bekić, the Monument to the Revolution and the Monument to the Medical Unit in the First World War. There is also the Headquarters Building and the Monument to Borislav Stanković in the City Park.

River Pcinja and nature in Pcinja territory
As the whole territory was named after the river Pcinja, it must be special. And it is. The river Pcinja started from the small town of Trgovište. The Lesnicka River and Tripušnica flow into it. Near the Prohor Monastery, Pčinjski leaves Serbia, goes through Northern Macedonia and flows into the Vardar River. The road through Serbia is 45 kilometers long.
This area around the river Pcinja in Serbia is also called the Valley of the river Pcinja. And it is a protected natural area. By the way, this river in the Pčinja district has two species of fish that can only be found here: “Mergur” (Pachychilon macedonicus) and “Burešlijeva brkica” (Barbatula burschi or Oxynoemacheilus bureschi). Around the river itself rise the mountains Kozjak, Rujna and Široke planine with their nature. So you can go hiking and have nature activities there also.
