Aleksinac has rich history, dating from prehistoric tome, with traces from 4800b.c. During that, and later times, even in antique period, it was with many inhabitants. During Roman era, this territory was part of very important route called Via militaris, and fortress Millareca. After them, Slavs came and conquered this territory.

Where is Aleksinac?

Aleksinac town located on about 35 kilometers from Nis or about 210 kilometers from Belgrade. You can come to Aleksinac from both directions by highway. It is located between mountains Jastrebac, Bukovnik and Ozren that you can use for hiking and enjoyment.

Office of museum in Aleksinac are located in Dusana Trivunca street number 7. The museum itself is organized like institution in 1963. Throughout many forms of organizing it existed till 2003 when it becomes independent institution. Museum Aleksinac takes care of more than 5000 objects from Aleksinac and surrounding territory. Location of Museum Aleksinac permanent exhibition is located in oldest house in the town. In location Momcilo Popovica 20. Th City house (Museum) was built in 1833. Visits to Aleksinac museum are possible workdays form 9-14 house.

Town Razanj and around

Near Aleksinac is located town Razanj, on some 25 kilometers distance. Razanj was known even in time of Romans. Than it was called Arsen.

By one legend, name was given after guns arsenal, or weapons warehouse. Today’s name Razanj, was from Ottoman time. The exact meaning of the name is unknown. But there are two theories. One is that Razanj got named by highest peak of Bukovik mountain, Rozanj(893 meters of altitude). The other theory is that it got name after weapons that locals used to protect themselves from Ottomans. The weapon looked like one kind of spike, that is translated in Serbian called “razanj”.

Not far away from town Razanj is location of very old monastery St. Roman, from 9th century. One important battle is connected to this monastery and Aleksinac. In 1876, there was one big battle for liberation of Aleksinac from Ottomans. That was Sumatovac battle. Except our soldiers on our side many brother countries fought on our side. One of them was volunteers from Russia. And most famous of them was Colonel Nikola Raevsky. Latter become more famous as Count Vronsky from novel Anna Karenina.

Saint Roman monastery in Djunis Serbia

Location of Saint Roman monastery is in Djunis, vilage that is about 20 kilometers away fro Aleksinac. And also about 9 from Razanj. From Nis to this monastery there are 52 and from Belgrade to Djunis it’s about 195 km. Exact time of building this monastery is unknown. It was first mentioned in writings from year 1019. Today, it is not in its original shape and size. Monastery St. Roman in Djunis was demolished from Ottomans and rebuilt after that several times. It is one of oldest Ortodox Christian object in Serbia.

In southern part of church there is room, named Lazaroma. That is location of body of Saint Roman. That is fact that raises importance of this monastery even more. In time of Uprising against Ottomans, this monastery served as hospital. So wounded fighters were brought from Deligrad to here. Also, thorough history, and today also, this place is mentioned as place for curing people with mental problems.

One strange thing happened in time of Serbian Turkish war. The grenade was fired at the monastery in 1877. It did not miss the church but did not explode. Someone would say it was a miracle. This grenade can be seen there today beside the altar. But today, it it’s emptied and not dangerous any more. Just evidence of past times and miracle.

For those who are romantic, and who’s favorite novel is Anna Karenina, this monastery is very important. In 1876 in battle with Ottoman Turks, for liberation of Serbia, and help to brother Serbian people, came Colonel Nikola Raevsky. Count Vronsky. And died in battle. That was Sumatovac battle. Initially, he was buried here. And latter, his body was transferred to family tomb. And his heart stayed burred here till today.

When visiting Monastery Saint Roman near Razanj and Aleksinac you can visit two important sights. First are St. Roman burial sight. Second is burial place of heart of hero Nikola Raevsky, Count Vronsky.

Russian church in Gornji Adrovac village near Aleksinac

Gornji Adrovac village is located on about 220 km from Belgrade and about 37km from Nis. From Aleksinac, which is nearest, village is located on about 11 kilometers. When Nikola Raevsky, Russian volunteer, died in Gornji Adrovac in Serbia, he was buried in here. In monastery Saint Roman, not far from the point where he died. In village Gornji Adrovac, was battle where “Count Vronsky” lost his life. Russian church or church dedicated to Holy Trinity was built in 1903. By the road all the way to church there are lindens sent from family of Vronsky’s estate

Lipovac monastery near Aleksinac

Monastery in village Lipovac is dedicated to Stefan The first martyr. The village is located about 35 km from Nis and 20 km from Aleksinac. And also on about 225km from Belgrade. It is unknown who and when built this monastery, initially church. That church was later expanded with sleeping part and than become monastery. The known fact is that on a cliff above the monastery was Lipovac fortress. And that the monastery was destroyed and rebuilt several times. First time it was destroyed was by Ottomas in 1413. after destruction of Lipovac fortress. Last time it was rebuilt it was in 1938.

Although, the founder of this monastery is unknown, it is presumed that it was Vitomir, the duke of Lipovac. He lived in 14th century. On land of the monastery was found several graves. After researching them, it was founded that some noble family is burred here. Probably his. From 1982 monastery of Saint Stefanin Lipovac is under State protection.

History of Aleksinac and around

One thing is sure. Life in this territory was known in far history, even Roman times. Maybe a few thousands years. First written traces Aleksinac are from the 14th century, and mention it as part of Kruševac territory. Writings were about many army’s that were here and its because important road was in vicinity. In one period thorough history this town was border town, and had much bigger role. That was in 19th century. And you were entering free Serbia of that time from Ottoman Empire here in Aleksinac. That lasted to 1878. Few years earlier in 1832 Aleksinac was liberated from Ottomans.

Not far away from Aleksinac is mining town Aleksinacki rudnik (Aleksinac mine). The mine was closed in 1883. Coal from this mine had great quality. But, because of misfortune mine was closed in 1989.

Deligrad and Deligrad fortress

During past times Aleksinac was place of few famous battles. In time of Serbian Turkish wars this territory got much bigger role. In 1806. in near by place Serbian freedom fighters built fortress near Deligrad. Because of that Aleksinac got it’s part. Till the downfall of uprising in 1813. this part was unconquerable for enemies. Deligrad battle is one of important victories of our liberation fight. In that honor there is church “Holly Archangel Michael and Gavrilo” with ossuary built in 1935. Also, there are still parts of fortification from that time. Deligrad is located on nine kilometers from Aleksinac.

Aleksinac through history was in center of many famous battles, and it had important role during history.  Serbian Turkish wars, it had in this territory many international volunteers, from which Russian Colonel Nikolai Nikolaevich Rayevski was most famous. He is character Count Vronsky, in world famous Anna Karenina novel. He died in a near by village Gornji Adrovac near Aleksinac. Today, on that place is Holy Trinity church, or Russian church that dates from 1903. The heart of Colonel Rayevski is buried in St.Roman monastery in village Djunis close to here. It is one of bigger towns near Niš, in southeast Serbia. Once it was a mining and industrial town. Today the territory of the Municipality of Aleksinac it belonged to the Roman province of Upper Moesia.  Along this road, were sells for the urban area of that time Praesidium Pompei and one station for changing horses Rappiana.

Aleksinac Today

Aleksinac municipality, located in the southeastern part of Serbia. Its with a very favorable geographical position with superb capabilities. Near by, its Sokobanjska Moravica river that can be useful if fly fishing is interesting to you. You can visit its many churches as historic monuments. You can visit churches and monasteries around Aleksinac. Except that some natures attractions. Rivers Morava and Sokobanjska Moravica, Bovan lake, Mountain Ozren and Jastebac (Small and Big).

In modern times you could see the town coming to it by motorway from Belgrade to Niš. To Aleksinac you can go from Niš with two roads. First is highway to Belgrade, and definitely better and faster. Other is older road. It’s still functional. And you can see villages by the road.

After liberation from Ottoman rule, it was no more border town but his role in modern Serbia continue. Near is Sokobanja spa.
