Parts of city of Niš
City of Nis largest city in Southeastern Serbia. From 2004. Nis is city with several parts. Municipalities of Nis are called Mediana, Red cross, Pantelej, Spa of Nis, Palilula. But, they have smaller parts. All of them have history and reasons for such names. Now lets try to tell their story.
Curved meadows on Nemanjic buolevard
Newest, and most urban part of Nis is certainly “Bulevar Nemanjica” (Nemanjic’s bulevard). It got it current name from middle ages rulers of Serbia. It changed it name from Bulevar Lenjina (Lenin boulevard). One part of it has name “Krive livade” that can be literally translated as curved meadows. The point was the farm fields were divided in wrong way. Great reason for the name. Before the buildings were built, there were meadows with corn there. Can’t stop the progress. 🙂
Part of city of Nis called “Ledena stena”
“Ledena stena” in Serbian can be translated as “ice rock”. The history of this name is from time, when here was local ice house. Because winds are strong in that area, they were used for ice production. That ice house was demolished in time. And today, there is only name from that time.
Part of Niš called Jagodin mala
During Ottoman time here, many things from then last to today. One of them are names the parts of city of Nis. of One of them is name of area around Early Christian basilica. It is located on the way to Jagodina, or Belgrade. It got it’s name for the interesting case of that period. When Ottoman conquerors were ruling here, local people did not like to pay taxes of that time. To punish then, Ottomans moved all people from that are to Bulgaria. And instead of them, people from Jagodina (city) were populated here.
Parts of Nis called Number 6, and Brzi brod
For this name, no.6, credit goes to German Nazi formation. In time of occupation of WWII, here were barracks of Sixt division of thier army. After Serbia and Nis were liberated, name stayed. So now, this part of Nis is called Number 6 (Broj 6). Brzi brod can be translated like “Fast ship” in English. But, nothing is so easy. Literally, translation of the name is like that? But, if you want to translate it in the best way, you could use different terms. This was place where people could go over the river fast. Like with boat. Or go over it by foot. This was place where you can go over the river. So, you can see that therm “brod” had different meaning in the past. Maybe more interesting fact, on this area is Mediana Nis locality.
Cair part in Nis
Part of Nis called Cair is location where is park Cair and city football stadium. It got it’s name after Turkish word ” çayır ” that means meadow. In past times, local people took their cattle, there every day.
Jorgovan mala in Nisu
Jorgovan mala part is located in main area of the city of Nis. It got it’s name after flowers in the gardens of people who lived there in the past. “Jorgovan” is lilac flower. So it can be translated as lilac street. Today, there is street Svetozara Markovica there, with few beautiful old houses to see. But no lilac’s any more.
Palilupa part, and Duvaniste of Nis Serbia
Almost every city in Serbia and town has it’s part called Palilula. Palilula part in Niš is located very near to the center of the city. It got it’s today’s name after smokers. In that time people smoked tabaco pipes. Tobacco pipe can be translated as “duvanska lula”. And also, smokers were light up the pipes. Or “Palili lulu”. Logic 🙂 Secondly, in part of Nis named Duvaniste, in past was are where tobacco was grown. To clarify, tobacco is in Serbia “duvan”.
Delijski vis and Ćele kula part in Nis Serbia
Firstly, Delijski vis is part where Ottomans executed local important people. “Delija” is word that describe important, strong, important people. Second part, “Cele kula” part is location of Scull tower monument in Nis. After it, all are of city was named.
Pantelej and Durlan area of Nis
Pantelej is area around Church of St. Panteliemon. It is famous because of the church. It is connected with “Jagodin mala” area. And also, Durlan got it’s name after Turkish word “dur”. Meaning of that word is “stop”. This was place where people of that time were entering the city, and payed taxes if needed.
Anyway, all parts have it’s history here. And also, the reason why are they called like that. From joint past with Ottoman empire, many words are same, here and there.
